New cool zone locations this summer

Posted: Monday 5 December 2011

Cool zonesStations in the Sydney CBD will feature cool zones to help customers beat the heat this summer.

For three months, starting 5 December 2011 and finishing on 26 February 2012, the cool zones have been installed at four of our busiest underground stations:

  • Central Station on platforms 24/25
  • Town Hall Station on platforms 1/2, 3 and 5/6
  • Martin Place Station on platforms 1/2
  • Wynyard Station on platforms 5/6.

The cool zones operate during peak times between 7.00am and 9.00am and between 3.00pm and 7.00pm.

These zones are created by using misting fans that blow microscopic water particles through a high-powered fan. The tiny water particles evaporate once they hit the warm air, leading to a cooler temperature.

The misting fans also increase ventilation and air movement on the platforms which helps to improve customer comfort. The water used in the misting fan system is filtered water and has no additional treatments.

Similar misting fan systems have proven effective at European train stations such as Milan and Rome, as well as at indoor sporting areas, public halls and warehouses.

The cool zones are sponsored by Lipton Ice Tea to help keep customers cool this summer.

During the 2010 cool zone trial at Town Hall Station, customers indicated that the cool zone had a positive impact on their personal comfort. A number of customers asked if the fans could be used at other stations and we hope they help make summer travel a bit more comfortable.
